WAAG Agility Dog Club Inc is an affiliate of the Agility Dog Association of Australia Ltd- otherwise known as ADAA. Based on the Gold Coast in Queensland, we enjoy agility using positive training methods. For other ADAA clubs in your area see our ADAA clubs page.

Training 2004

We commence training on Friday January 30 with a welcome back night. Our weekly training commences with set-up at 6pm for the Starters courses. Intermediate classes start at 8:00pm and finish at 9pm sharp. Instructors train from 7:30pm to 8pm. The first Friday of each month is dedicated to our WAAG Dog of the Year competition which commences at 7:45pm. Our first round for 2003 is on February 6.

Grounds
We train at James Overall Park on Brighton Parade, Southport. The grounds are shared with the rugby club. The park is designated as a dog off-leash park and has its own small dog beach for swimming in the Nerang River.
Feel welcome to come early and exercise your dogs to take an edge off their excitement but please remember the two golden rules.
1.
You must be in control of your dog at all times. If off-lead, your dog needs to return to you when called even with distractions.
2.
You must clean up after your dog. Poo bags and bins are provided.

Cost
All handlers that are training on the equipment need to be members of the club for insurance purposes. Annual membership runs from July 1st to June 30th each year and regular membership is $25 per year but see our membership forms and pricing schedule for more information. In Intermediate and Open classes each night of training costs $5 per member, regardless of the number of dogs being trained by that member. Please try to have the correct change for training. Learning how to safely do all the equipment and directing your dog around a short course takes about six months and we have structured this into three eight week courses- Agility 1, Agility 2 and Agility 3. Each of these starters courses have a fixed fee associated with them.

If you are an experienced agility handler and want to "come and try" for a night, then casual membership is available for $5 for the night. Casual membership is limited to three occasions. This is best suited to those who are already at intermediate level and either already belong to another club or haven't trained for a while and are wanting to "try out WAAG". We welcome casual members with open minds. You will be asked to sign in our membership logbook and provide some personal details for insurance purposes. If you are just starting out in agility and want to see what it is all about, feel free to come along to any training night and watch; but please do not play on the equipment until you are in Agility 1 class and learn how to do so safely.

WAAG Classes:

Starters Courses
Starting agility at WAAG is structured so that you and your dog learn this sport in a safe and fun environment. We have broken the basis required to learn agility into three eight-week courses- Agility 1, Agility 2 and Agility 3. The first course, Agility1, teaches the foundation skills required for your dog to safely and efficiently complete agility obstacles. At the end of agility 1 your dog will have great rear-end coordination and strength, will be able to complete tunnels and planks with confidence and will be confident with movement underfoot. Most importantly though you and your dog will be learning to work as a team and you will have learned how to shape your dog's behaviour. The second course, Agility2, focuses on building solid contact and weaving behaviour as well as learning how to execute turns to direct your dog around short sequences of hurdles. At the end of the third course, Agility3, your dog will be able to successfully complete each individual piece of equipment and you will be able to direct your dog safely around short agility courses at speed.

Each of these three classes is limited to 8 handlers per instructor. The courses will introduce training using positive reinforcement- and in particular clicker training. So you need to come armed with yummy dog treats and anything your dog finds rewarding such as a ball, tug toy or a kong. At the end of the six months of courses you and your dog will be able to guide your dog around a short course and safely complete individual obstacles including weave poles, the dog walk, the A-Frame, tunnels and hurdles. If your dog is having problems at any point you are invited to stay longer with that Agility class until you have both achieved your aims confidently. The dogs that stay for another eight weeks most often become the stars of the next course as both handlers and dogs gain confidence and handlers often become more consistent with clicking and rewarding.

Once you have completed the three starters classes you can start to join in our WAAG Dog of the Year courses that are on monthly at training. You can also start to think more seriously about competing if that is what you wish for. A good starting point for competitions are the elementary and starters classes held at ADAA competitions. See our "WAAGer's Guide to Competing in ADAA Agility" for more information on competitions. If you just want to have fun with your dog without stressing yourself with competing then you are more than welcome at training and may find our Dog of the Year courses all the agility you need.

To see when the next starters classes are due to commence, see our schedule below. For more information about the starters classes including pricing packages read "Starting Agility with WAAG". To sign up for any of the starter's courses download and complete the application form (pdf file). Course fees and application forms need to be completed and forwarded to the club by the booking closing date to be admitted to the next course.

We welcome all starters who are willing to embrace reward-based methods of training. At WAAG you will be asked to reward your dog with food, toys or both. Please note that if you are uncomfortable with using these forms of rewards in your dog's training then the WAAG Starters' courses may not be suited to you.

Intermediate
The Intermediate class is for those who have graduated from the starters' courses. It is suited to dogs and handlers who are able to complete a sequence of agility obstacles smoothly and at speed. This class is aimed at refining your handling skills so that you and your dog work as an effective partnership. In this class some emphasis is placed on developing distance handling work as well. Training at this level is most often completed using a set of specific challenges that are set up by the instructor to help develop and test particular skills. Your instructor will assist you in finding which handling skills work best for you and your dog in completing the challenges.

WAAG Dog of the Year Rounds
At 7:30pm on the first Friday of each month, in lieu of Intermediate and Open training, a course is set up that will constitute a round of the WAAG Dog of the Year Competition. These courses will alternate between agility, jumping and games. Click here to read more about this competition and see the dates for each round. Sponsored by Vet's All Natural.
